One Out of the Box - Khao Lak Cops A Whack!

Numerous jellyfish stings have been reported here in recent months with some appearing to be from various species of box jellyfish and others not. Of course, as mentioned in previous posts, this blog is not a sting reporting system so it is anyone's guess as to how many stings are occurring at any moment. We know of stings around Railay, Phuket, Samui and Koh Kood but here's one from Khao Lak on June 30, 2012 - a location that is not often reported although there was a solid box jellyfish sting report from a Khao Lak beach in April, 2012.

Here is the link to a surf blog that reported the sting:

Box Jellyfish stings local surfer

One of our local surfers is recovering after being stung by a box jellyfish while surfing. This is the first known sting from a box jellyfish in this part of Thailand that we have heard about. It happened at the rivermouth near Memories Beach Bar on Pakarang Cape. The surfer washed off with vinegar but still suffered the effects of the sting for three days. Symptoms included nausea, shortness of breath. muscle seizures, hallucinations and the pain involved with the sting itself. The good news is that the victim has recovered and looking foward to getting back into the water, but with a long sleeve lycra rashguard or sting suit. It is recommended that anyone getting stung by a jellyfish seek medical attention or at least report it to the local clinic or hotel doctor.
