Koh Phangan Tragedy - Box Jellyfish Kills French Boy
Sad news published in the Bangkok Post (25 August 2014) of a 5 year old French boy killed by a box jellyfish on Koh Phangan, Thailand.
Little is known of the tragedy at this moment, but deepest sympathies to the boy's family at this shocking time.
A warning to swimmers and other water users all around Thailand to take caution. Potentially deadly box jellyfish exist throughout coastal regions of the entire country. Stings are not common but they happen.
Authorities on Koh Phangan and Koh Samui have continually ignored the advice of Thai and international experts and have refused to take this issue seriously. This is not the first time and will not be the last - who is next?
The situation here is fast becoming negligent. If Phuket, Koh Mak, Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Koh Lipe and others are prepared to take the responsibility, realise they have a duty of care and not just talk but actually take action and install a safety warning and treatment system to protect water users, why can't Koh Phangan and Koh Samui?
Unfortunately, it is the horrible and tragic death of an innocent and vulnerable boy on holiday with his family that will hopefully for the welfare of others on these islands spark the authorities here to finally do the right thing.
